About the Role

We’re seeking an experienced News SEO Specialist who thrives in fast-paced, real-time news environments and understands how search, audience behavior, and editorial judgment intersect under deadline pressure.

This role sits at the heart of the newsroom. You’ll work closely with editors and reporters to ensure breaking and trending stories are optimized to perform across Google Top Stories, Google News, and Discover, while also maintaining strong technical SEO foundations across a large-scale, content-rich site.

Key Responsibilities
Real-Time & Editorial SEO

- Optimize breaking and trending news headlines in real time to maximize visibility and CTR in Google Top Stories and Discover.
- Collaborate directly with editors pre-publication to guide headline structure, keyword targeting, internal linking, and story framing.
- Advise editorial teams on search demand using Google Trends and real-time audience signals.
- Monitor story performance minute-by-minute and recommend rapid updates to improve reach and longevity.

Performance Monitoring & Analysis

- Track live and post-publication traffic using Chartbeat and/or Parse.ly, identifying opportunities to extend story lifespan.
- Monitor search performance, indexation, and Discover visibility via Google Search Console.
- Provide clear, actionable SEO insights to editorial stakeholders—fast, concise, and newsroom-friendly.

Technical & Site SEO

- Audit and maintain SEO health across a large, content-heavy news site.
- Ensure correct implementation and performance of:
News Article Schema
AMP and mobile performance
Core Web Vitals and page speed best practices

- Use crawling tools (e.g. Screaming Frog) to identify technical issues such as indexation gaps, duplication, internal linking weaknesses, or crawl inefficiencies.
- Partner with product and engineering teams (where applicable) to prioritize SEO-impacting fixes.

Required Experience & Skills

Must-Have Experience

- Proven experience working in a fast-paced, real-time news or media environment.
- Hands-on expertise with:
Google Top Stories
Google News
Google Discover

- Strong understanding of news-specific SEO, including freshness, authority, and story lifecycle management.
- Experience managing SEO for large-scale, content-rich publishing sites.

Tools & Technical Proficiency

- Advanced use of:

Google Search Console
Google Trends
Chartbeat and/or Parse.ly
Screaming Frog or similar crawler
Solid understanding of structured data, especially NewsArticle schema.
Strong grasp of mobile-first SEO, AMP, and performance optimization.

Editorial & Communication Skills

- Comfortable working directly with editors under tight deadlines.
- Able to explain SEO recommendations clearly and pragmatically to non-technical stakeholders.
- Confident decision-maker who can balance speed, accuracy, and optimization.

- better headers/author information
- optional call to action feature at bottom of every article, like a box with a special offer inside.
