About the work

We are a US-based business services firm building an outbound program across roughly 59 defined target universes. We write the specifications ourselves and they are detailed: company criteria, contact criteria, required fields, sources, verification steps, edge cases, and explicit rejection rules, all written out. You build the lists against them.

This is not "find me SaaS companies with 50 to 200 employees." Some of these lists are firmographic filters you could run in an afternoon. Others require reading websites and extracting a defensible number, grouping people-search results by company, or reading individual career histories where no filter exists for the qualifying fact. We know the difference and we price for it.

We start with a paid test of five lists at 50 records each. If it goes well, this becomes ongoing work at meaningful volume for a long time.

How the engagement works

You bring your own Clay license. We do not provide one and we are not looking to share a seat. You run the tables, you own the workspace.

Data costs are a pass-through. Bill us for credits and provider costs at what they cost you, itemised, with no markup. We would rather see the real number than have it buried in a rate.

Your time is billed separately. Hourly or by project, your call, and tell us which and why.

We want the two separated because we want to understand the economics of each list properly. A list that costs $40 in credits and two hours is a different proposition from one that costs $300 in credits and eight hours, and we make different decisions about volume depending on which it is. Bundling them hides exactly the information we need.

The test project

Five lists, 50 records each, 250 records total. One contact per company.

The five span deliberately different kinds of work:

1. A firmographic build where the difficulty is a taxonomy problem: distinguishing one type of financial services company from four lookalike types that would ruin the list
2. A build that starts with twelve known websites rather than a database, where you extract the universe from published pages
3. A build requiring you to visit each company's product catalog and produce a defensible SKU estimate with a stated method
4. A build where you search people by title and then group the results by company, rather than the other way round
5. A build where the qualifying fact sits in an individual's career history and there is no filter for it

We will send the full specification document before you start.

It is around 38 pages including reference tables, and we expect you to read it.

What we care about

1. Accuracy over volume. If a field cannot be established from public sources, "Not Found" is the correct answer and we treat it as a complete record. A plausible guess is a defect. On the hardest of the five lists, a file with no "Not Found" values anywhere tells us the fields were filled rather than researched.

2. Showing your work. Every record carries a Sources and Method field. For each list we also want a short written note on how you built it and where you had to make a judgment call, plus the table structure: providers used, enrichment steps and their order, where you used an AI or agent step and what you asked it, and where you used conditional logic.

3. Telling us when something does not work. If a list is not buildable as specified, say so and say why. That is a useful answer and it will not count against you. Thirty records that hold up beats fifty that do not.

3. Walk us through a list where the qualifying criterion was not available as a filter — something that had to be read off a website or out of a work history and then classified. What did you do, what was your accuracy, and how did you handle the records where the answer was genuinely unclear?

4. Clay is row-per-record. If we ask for "companies that employ three or more people with a particular job title," how do you produce that? Describe the actual mechanics. This one is a real problem in Clay and we want to know how you solve it.

5. Which providers do you use for company data, contact data, email finding, and work history, and why those? Tell us where each one is weak. Where do you use Claygent or an AI step, and how do you know when it has returned something confident and wrong?

To be clear about the opportunity

The test is 250 records. The program behind it is 59 universes and roughly 10,000 records a month at full volume, running for years. We are looking for one person to own the list building side of it. We have the specifications written, we know what good looks like, and we pay promptly.
