I am seeking an experienced film/television development professional, producer, screenwriter, or pitch consultant to help develop and position a feature film or limited series based on the remarkable true story of New Orleans’ Colored Waifs’ Home.

At the center of the story are Captain Joseph G. Jones, his wife Manuella Duplessis Jones, and Professor Peter Davis, whose work with disadvantaged and wayward African American boys in early twentieth-century New Orleans helped create an extraordinary environment of discipline, education, structure, marching, and music.

Captain Jones was a veteran of the Spanish-American War and subsequent military service connected with the Cuban and Philippine campaigns. Drawing upon his military experience, Jones brought structure and discipline to boys who might otherwise have faced incarceration alongside adults.

Working beside him was Manuella Duplessis Jones, whose important but largely forgotten role included caring for the boys and helping sustain the institution.

Another central figure was Professor Peter Davis, the home's music instructor. Under Davis, music became an important part of the institution's program and identity.

Among the boys who passed through the Colored Waifs’ Home was an impoverished New Orleans youngster named Louis Armstrong.

Armstrong's experiences at the Home—and particularly his exposure to its disciplined musical environment—became an important part of his development. He would eventually emerge as one of the most influential musicians of the twentieth century.

But this is not intended to be another Louis Armstrong biographical film.

The larger story is about the people and institution that were there before the world knew Louis Armstrong: Captain Joseph Jones, Manuella Duplessis Jones, Professor Peter Davis, the boys they cared for, and the remarkable environment they created within segregated New Orleans.

Armstrong provides an extraordinary historical thread through the film, but the project's purpose is to bring the largely forgotten story of the Colored Waifs’ Home and the people behind it to the screen.

The Project

Years of historical and genealogical research have produced a substantial collection of archival material, photographs, newspaper accounts, government records, family history, and other primary-source evidence relating to the Home and the people associated with it.
