We recently commissioned a first attempt and were highly unsatisfied. The previous artist attempted to "head-swap" or photobash our mascot’s head onto a stock body. Hi, my name is Hugh Fenton. I'm developing Literacy Heroes, a new Australian children's literacy project built around a world of animal characters and approximately 60–120 short children's stories.

Literacy Heroes is designed to help families turn home reading and writing practice into real progress. It combines systematic phonics, decodable reading, handwriting practice and engaging character-based stories that also explore things like persistence, kindness, confidence and being different.

The aim is to create something children genuinely enjoy spending time with — not just another worksheet or reading exercise.

I'm looking for an exceptional illustrator who is particularly strong at character, expression, humour and emotional storytelling, while also being able to work in a relatively simple and scalable illustration style.

This is not intended to be a one-off children's book. If we find the right creative fit, there is the potential for a substantial amount of ongoing paid illustration work over several years.

The illustration approach:
The books will generally be around 20–25 pages.

Artwork is there to support the story rather than dominate it. Many pages may contain a character, two characters or a simple prop with little or no background.

The target production budget is approximately A$50 per finished page, so a 20-page book would generally be around A$1,000 and a 25-page book around A$1,250.

I want to be upfront about the budget from the beginning. The advantage for the right illustrator is the potential scale of the project, recurring characters and the efficiencies that should develop as we build the visual world together.

Communication is very important:
Because of the scale and pace of this project, I'm looking for someone who is highly responsive and easy to communicate with.

We are looking for a skilled illustrator to create charming and expressive animal illustrations for a children’s storybook.

I’m after a true likeness with natural skin tones and traditional brushwork built in layers with professional-grade oils on stretched canvas or linen—whichever surface you work best on.
