## 1. Background

Lagos is one of Africa's largest and fastest-changing urban regions. As the city expands, low-income households face different challenges accessing adequate and affordable housing.

Some households rent accommodation and struggle with housing costs or insecure tenancy. Others live in existing family-owned or inherited properties that require repairs and improvements. Still others purchase or inherit land and gradually construct homes over several years, often without access to conventional mortgage financing.

This research seeks to understand how these households already finance their housing needs, what barriers they encounter, and what forms of support they believe could improve their housing security.

The study is intentionally exploratory. It does not assume that mortgages, microloans, or any particular financial product are the appropriate solution.

## 2. Research Objective

The primary objective is to document how financially constrained households in three Lagos communities mobilize money and social resources to secure, maintain, improve, or build housing.

**Central Research Question**

How do low-income households in Lagos finance access to housing, improvements to existing homes, and incremental home construction, and what financial or institutional constraints limit their housing security?

The study will investigate:

- Household income sources, savings, and financial stability.
- Formal and informal financing practices, including ajo/esusu, family contributions, remittances, borrowing, and personal savings.
- Housing-related expenditures, financial trade-offs, and delayed investments.
- The influence of tenancy, ownership, inheritance, and land rights on housing decisions.
- The types of financial or institutional support households themselves consider useful.

## 3. Study Locations and Participant Requirements

The researcher will recruit **nine adult participants**, with three interviews in each community.

### Site A: Ajegunle- Rental Housing and Housing Security

**Target: 3 renter households**

Recruit households that have direct experience with one or more of the following:

- Difficulty accumulating money for rent or advance rent payments.
- Borrowing or using savings groups to meet housing costs.
- Paying for repairs or improvements to rented accommodation.
- Challenges relating to landlord responsibilities, overcrowding, or tenancy insecurity.

**Research emphasis:** How households finance access to housing when they do not own the property.

### Site B: Mushin- Housing Maintenance and Improvements

**Target: 3 households maintaining or improving existing housing**

Prioritize:

- At least one household living in a family-owned or inherited property.
- At least one household that has completed a significant repair or improvement.
- At least one household that has postponed an essential repair because of financial constraints.

Relevant improvements may include roofing, sanitation, flooring, drainage, structural repairs, or additional rooms.

**Research emphasis:** How households finance improvements to existing housing, and how property rights and household resources affect investment decisions.

### Site C: Epe- Incremental Home Construction

**Target: 3 low-income households constructing homes in stages**

Prioritize:

- At least one household currently building a home incrementally.
- At least one household whose construction has stalled or been delayed.
- At least one household that has completed a significant construction stage through savings or informal financing.

The researcher should focus on modest household-led construction rather than speculative property development or high-income housing estates.

**Research emphasis:** How households acquire land, mobilize construction capital, sequence building activities, and manage financing gaps.

**Important:** These are recruitment profiles, not assumptions that all residents of each community have identical incomes or housing circumstances. Participants should be screened for actual housing experiences and financial constraints.

## 4. Scope of Work

### Task 1: Recruitment and Screening

Identify suitable participants through appropriate local networks, community contacts, or direct outreach.

Before interviews, provide an anonymized recruitment summary showing:

- Community and participant code.
- General housing arrangement (renter, owner, family-owned property, etc.).
- Main livelihood or income source.
- Housing activity or financial challenge relevant to the study.
- Reason the participant meets the recruitment criteria.

Participants must be adults aged 18 or older. Recruitment should seek diversity in gender, occupation, and household circumstances where feasible.

Participation must be voluntary. No participant should be coached, misrepresented, or selected to produce a predetermined answer.

### Task 2: Conduct Nine In-Person Interviews

Conduct nine semi-structured interviews, approximately **30-45 minutes each**, in the language most comfortable for the participant.

The client will provide an interview guide.

The researcher must use open-ended questions and appropriate follow-up probes to obtain concrete examples of actual housing decisions.

Interview topics should include:

1. Current housing situation and household background.
2. Livelihoods, income regularity, and financial responsibilities.
3. How the household paid for its most recent major housing expense.
4. Use of savings, ajo/esusu, family assistance, remittances, formal or informal loans.
5. Housing investments postponed, reduced, or abandoned because of insufficient funds.
6. Experiences with landlords, contractors, financial institutions, or government processes.
7. Financial trade-offs made to meet housing needs.
8. The household's housing aspirations and preferred forms of support.

Where possible, participants should reconstruct a specific housing-financing experience, including the sequence of events, sources of funds, obstacles, and eventual outcome.

### Task 3: Video Recording and Housing Documentation

Subject to separate informed consent, the researcher will:

- Video-record each interview with clear audio.
- Capture approximately 2–5 minutes of contextual footage of the housing conditions relevant to the participant's experience.
- Where appropriate, invite the participant to explain a specific repair, unfinished structure, shared facility, or housing challenge.

Possible documentation includes:

- General condition of the dwelling.
- Roofing, walls, flooring, and construction materials.
- Sanitation and water facilities.
- Unfinished construction or repairs.
- Evidence of incremental additions or modifications.

**Ethical requirements:**

Housing footage is optional. Participants may agree to an interview but decline filming their home or face. Audio-only interviews are acceptable where recording consent is given.

The researcher must not film children, neighboring households, identifiable documents, exact addresses, or private spaces without appropriate permission.

The researcher must never stage, exaggerate, or alter housing conditions.

Video footage is intended to provide research context, not to prove or disprove a participant's personal account.

### Task 4: Transcription and Translation

Provide one complete English transcript for each interview.

Each transcript must:

- Include interviewer questions and participant responses.
- Preserve the substance and meaning of participants' statements.
- Translate Yoruba, Nigerian Pidgin, or other local-language responses accurately into English.
- Identify the speaker throughout.
- Include timestamps at approximately five-minute intervals.
- Mark unclear or inaudible passages.
- Avoid invented or reconstructed responses.

AI-assisted transcription is permitted only with prior client approval and appropriate confidentiality protections. Every transcript must be manually checked against the recording.

### Task 5: Field Observation Notes

Prepare a one-page field observation report for each participant.

The report should include:

- Participant code and community.
- Housing type and tenure arrangement.
- General livelihood or occupation.
- Housing conditions observed, where permitted.
- Housing-financing practices described.
- Main challenges and financial trade-offs.
- Relevant observations not fully captured in the interview.
- Any limitations affecting the reliability or completeness of the interview.

The report must clearly distinguish participant statements from the researcher's own observations.

### Task 6: Consolidated Fieldwork Summary

Prepare a short final report of approximately 3-5 pages summarizing:

- Common housing-financing practices across participants.
- Differences between renters, households improving existing housing, and incremental builders.
- The role of informal finance and social networks.
- Financial and institutional constraints identified.
- Solutions or priorities proposed by participants.
- Unexpected findings or contradictions.
- Limitations of the small qualitative sample.

The report should present findings neutrally and should not attempt to prove a predetermined hypothesis.

## 5. Deliverables- TBC

Files must be organized by anonymized participant codes, such as AJ01, MU01, and EP01, and delivered through a secure method agreed with the client.

## 6. Research Ethics, Consent, and Data Protection

Fieldwork must not begin until the client confirms the required university research-ethics determination or approval.

The researcher must:

- Explain the study purpose and voluntary nature of participation.
- Obtain informed consent before conducting interviews.
- Obtain separate consent for audio recording, video recording, and filming housing conditions.
- Allow participants to skip questions or withdraw from participation.
- Avoid collecting unnecessary identifying information.
- Protect participant identities and maintain confidentiality.
- Store recordings and transcripts securely.
- Use only client-approved tools for recording, transcription, translation, and file transfer.
- Delete local copies according to the agreed data-management protocol.
- Never share footage, photographs, recordings, or transcripts publicly.
- Avoid promising loans, housing assistance, employment, or other benefits.

Participant reimbursement, if any, must be agreed in advance and structured to avoid undue influence.

## 7. Required Qualifications

The ideal applicant will have:

- Demonstrated experience conducting qualitative field interviews or community-based research.
- Familiarity with Lagos communities and urban housing conditions.
- Ability to travel to Ajegunle, Mushin, and Epe.
- Fluency in English and Yoruba and/or Nigerian Pidgin.

I am a licensed clinical psychologist and university faculty member looking for help with a systematic review and meta-analysis, beginning with a feasibility study and ending with help with the write up of the JOURNAL ARTICLE FOR Q1/Q2 journal

Topic

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is one of the most researched personality disorders worldwide, and treatments such as dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), schema therapy, and mentalization-based treatment have a substantial evidence base. Almost all of that evidence comes from Western countries. In the Middle East and North Africa, a growing number of studies have tested these treatments, but no review has brought them together across the region or examined how they were adapted to local contexts.

This review will identify and appraise studies evaluating psychological and psychosocial treatments for BPD delivered in MENA countries, and will pool their results through meta-analysis where the data allow.

A central focus of the review is cultural adaptation. For each study, we will examine whether the treatment was adapted for the local context, what was changed (for example language, content, family involvement, or religious framing), how the adaptation was carried out, and whether adapted treatments show different outcomes from those delivered without modification.

Phase 1, feasibility study

Before committing to the full review, we will run preliminary searches to estimate how many eligible studies exist, what designs they use, and whether they report enough data for meta-analysis. This involves

- Developing and testing search strategies in English and regional databases
- Checking for existing reviews and registered protocols (PROSPERO, Cochrane)
- Screening a sample of results and summarizing what we find


Phase 2, full systematic review and meta-analysis
