I am a PhD researcher in Economics seeking an experienced applied econometrician or applied economist to critically review and help reframe an empirical paper on urban greenness and subjective wellbeing in Italy.

## Project overview

The paper studies whether municipality-level vegetation greenness, measured using NDVI, is associated with individual self-reported happiness.

The individual data come from a household survey with a short and unbalanced panel component. Happiness is measured on a 1–10 scale. The main environmental measure is annual municipality-level NDVI derived from satellite data.

The dataset has already been constructed, several models have been estimated in R, and substantial preliminary results and diagnostic outputs are available.

I am not looking for someone simply to run additional regressions. I need an independent expert who can critically evaluate the current empirical strategy, determine what the paper is actually able to estimate, and provide a concrete direction for developing the strongest defensible paper from the available data.

## Current empirical approaches

The existing analysis includes:

* individual first-difference models for non-movers;
* individual fixed-effects linear models;
* correlated random-effects / Mundlak and within-between specifications;
* ordered logit and cumulative-link models;
* cumulative-link mixed models with individual and municipality random effects;
* weighted and unweighted specifications;
* several robustness and diagnostic analyses.

The panel is short and highly unbalanced. Many individuals are observed only once, and the current first-difference sample is strongly dominated by one survey interval.

The main preliminary pattern is:

* no statistically significant positive association between changes in municipal NDVI and changes in happiness in first-difference or individual fixed-effects models;
* a negative within-area NDVI coefficient in some ordered-response and within-between models;
* concerns about proportional-odds assumptions, scale heterogeneity, repeated-observation dependence, model complexity, and mixed-model convergence.

These findings should not be interpreted mechanically. I need help determining whether the differences across models reflect different estimands, model misspecification, sample structure, measurement error, or statistical noise.

## Main methodological challenges

The consultant should critically assess:

* whether municipality-level NDVI is an adequate measure for the research question;
* the distinction between individual green-space exposure and the broader vegetated context of a municipality;
* limited within-municipality variation and measurement error;
* the use of first differences versus individual fixed effects;

## What I need

The purpose of this assignment is not simply to approve or reject the current empirical strategy.

I need a constructive and actionable assessment of the strongest paper that can credibly be developed from the available data.

If the original research question or preferred models are not defensible, the consultant should propose a concrete alternative direction, including:

* how the research question and estimand should be reformulated;
* which model should become the primary specification;
* which existing models should be retained, revised, moved to robustness checks, or removed;
* which additional analyses or data improvements are genuinely necessary;
* how null, mixed, or unexpected findings should be interpreted;

## Expected initial deliverables

The initial assignment should ideally include:

## Restricted-data workflow

The confidential individual-level microdata are held by an institution and are not directly available to me for external sharing.

I do not have a copy of the full confidential dataset that I can send to an external consultant. The analysis must therefore follow a code-only or restricted-data workflow.

Also get the details of any nearby business (name of person, business name and contact who can tell you whether the institution existed or not)

6- Please ensure that the name on the document matches the name on the signboard of the authority you visit. If there is a different name, ask them for the reason for the discrepancy. Ask them to write a one-line explanation on the form or provide BRC.

7- Check the forms before leaving the site, ensure that the start date, end date, and designation are the same on both the form and the certificate.

8- Check that all the fields are properly filled on the form.
