We run an Australian online marketplace for buying, selling and leasing robots. Think carsales.com.au, but for industrial and commercial robots — buyers browse listings, filter, compare and enquire with sellers.

The site is live and built in Next.js with Tailwind and shadcn/ui. We recently rebuilt the front end and, while the code is in good shape, the visual design drifted towards a "modern tech product" look rather than a marketplace. Feedback from our client and an independent UX review both said the same thing: it is too bright and too spacious, it takes too much effort to scan, and it shows too little inventory per screen. It reads like a brochure rather than a shop.

We are not redesigning. We want someone with real marketplace experience to guide us in tuning what we already have.

Review the live site against carsales.com.au and comparable marketplaces, and tell us specifically what to change
Advise on the global design decisions first: spacing scale, type scale, card size, grid density, use of white space, background contrast, and emphasis on product imagery

I’m building an HRTech SaaS platform designed to help people navigate their careers and get better opportunities.

The idea is simple, but the product isn’t.

We want to bring together several parts of the job-seeking journey in one place:

- Resume creation & optimization (Templates are ready)
- LinkedIn profile optimization
- AI-powered interview practice
- 1:1 coaching with HR and career experts
- Personal career development and progress
- Practical tools that help people become more confident and job-ready

And this is where I need your help.

What I'm looking for:

I’m looking for a creative UI/UX Designer who can take ideas that sometimes feel complicated or messy and turn them into experiences that feel simple, intuitive and genuinely enjoyable to use.

You won't just be designing screens.

I want someone who thinks about:

“What is the user trying to achieve?”

“What is confusing here?”

“How can we make this feel easier?”

“What should the user see, understand and do next?”

You should have a strong foundation in UX principles, user journeys, information architecture and interaction design, but also have a strong visual eye.

Someone who can take a complex workflow and say:

“Okay, how do we make this feel simple?”

The kind of designer I'm looking for

You might be a great fit if you:

- Have a solid understanding of UI/UX fundamentals
- Know how to design clear and intuitive customer/user journeys
- Care deeply about the user experience, not just how the interface looks
- Can simplify complex ideas into simple interactions
- Have a strong sense of visual hierarchy, spacing, typography and composition
- Can create interfaces that are both functional and visually appealing
- Enjoy exploring different ideas rather than immediately jumping into the first solution
- Can explain why you designed something a certain way
- Are comfortable working with an early-stage product where not everything is figured out yet
- Are curious about AI, HRTech, SaaS and the future of work

Bonus points if...

You've worked on:

- SaaS products
- HRTech / EdTech / FinTech
- AI-powered products
- Career platforms
- Marketplaces
- Complex dashboards or workflows
- Products where user onboarding and engagement are important

But I care much more about how you think than whether you've worked in HRTech before.

What you would actually do

You would work closely with me to transform product ideas into something people can actually understand and use.

That could mean:

Idea → User journey → Wireframe → Prototype → Visual design → Product

You'd help shape things like:

- User onboarding
- Resume-building experiences
- LinkedIn optimization flows
- AI interview experiences
- Coaching journeys
- Dashboards and progress tracking
- Career assessments
- Mobile/web experiences
- Design system and reusable components

And because this is an early-stage product, you'll have a real opportunity to influence the product, not simply receive a Figma brief and execute it.

I already have a lot of ideas.

What I need is someone who can challenge them, structure them, simplify them and turn them into experiences that make people say:

“Oh, that's actually really easy to use.”

How we'll work:

This is an early-stage project, so expect a lot of collaboration, experimentation and iteration.

You won't be handed a 50-page specification.

We'll probably have conversations that sound more like:

“I have this idea… but I'm not sure how it should work.”

And your job will be to help turn that into:

“Okay, now I can see it.”
