Eth0 is a fixed, static IP address that talks to another board. Eth1 is initially DHCP and would connect to a switch for external system communication but falls back to a fixed link local address if DHCP fails so that it can be connected to a PC for configuration on a link-local address. For this reason, Eth1 must have a netmask of 16, otherwise the PC won’t have access to the device automatically. When configured this way our embedded Linux routes all traffic through only one of the interfaces and does not separate based on IP address. I’ve been told this is a Linux quirk. Unfortunately, we cannot move eth0 away from the link-local address. I presume this can be done with routing tables, but we lack the expertise to configure them.
