POOCH NIRVANA — Character Reference Brief

For: Illustrator Project: Pooch Nirvana — illustrated serialized stories and children's book series Deliverable: Character reference set (the "bible") plus one finished style plate

WHAT THIS IS FOR

Pooch Nirvana is an ongoing illustrated story world built around two Briard sisters, Diane and Devi, and a late Papillon, Ella. It runs as a weekly serialized story on Instagram and Substack, and will become a children's book series.

This commission is not a one-off illustration. It is the reference set that every future frame in the series is built from. Consistency matters more than beauty here. These drawings define what the characters look like permanently.

Please treat this as a technical reference sheet, not finished artwork. Flat even lighting, plain or blank backgrounds, no scenery, no dramatic angles.

THE CHARACTERS
Diane — the elder Briard

Large, shaggy, ancient-looking. The bearing of someone who has seen several previous lifetimes and found them broadly satisfactory. She does not rush. She does not perform. She is usually the stillest thing in the room. Often sitting upright and watching.

Devi — the younger Briard

Also a Briard, but lighter in every sense. Golden, enthusiastic, still becoming. She rushes. She is easily delighted. She is the one who asks questions. Physically a little smaller and less settled than Diane.

Ella — Papillon (see separate note below)

Small, fine-boned, with the large butterfly ears the breed is named for. She is no longer living, and appears in the stories as a quiet presence rather than a participant.

CRITICAL REQUIREMENT — DISTINGUISHABILITY

Diane and Devi are the same breed. Two large shaggy grey dogs can become indistinguishable at small sizes, and most of this work is viewed on a phone.

They must be instantly tellable apart at thumbnail size, in silhouette, and in a single colour.

Please solve this structurally, not with small details. Options might include coat tone, size differential, ear carriage, head shape, or posture. Whatever the solution is, it gets locked here and carries through the entire series.

I'd welcome your judgement on this. It is the single most important decision in the commission.

A single fully rendered frame showing all of the above in the finished style: line weight, colour palette, paper texture, level of detail. This becomes the visual standard for everything that follows.

Suggested subject: the two of them in a hallway, one sitting squarely in the doorway, the other watching from further back.

A NOTE ON ELLA

Ella is a real dog who has died. She appears in the stories rarely and is never explained.

She should carry a barely perceptible luminosity — slightly more light around her than the others. Not a halo, not an effect, nothing obvious. Just enough that a reader notices something without being able to say what.

Please handle her gently. She matters more than her page count suggests.

STYLE

Colored pencil. Warm, hand-made, textured. Paper grain visible. The feel of a good picture book rather than a polished digital illustration.

The tone of the work is dry and warm. Funny first, quiet second. Never cute, never sentimental, never cartoonish. The dogs are dogs — they do not wear clothes, stand on two legs, or have human expressions. The humour comes from how seriously they take themselves.

I am commissioning these as full buyout, all commercial rights, including:

Use across social media, newsletters, books, print, and merchandise
Use as reference and training input for AI image generation. These drawings will be used as style and character references in Midjourney to produce additional frames in the series. The human illustration sets the standard; the AI scales the daily output from it. Finished book covers and interior pages will be commissioned as original drawings.

I want to be completely straightforward about the AI element before any work begins. If this is something you would rather not be part of, I entirely understand, and I'd rather know now than discover it later. If you are open to it, I'd like it stated plainly in the agreement.

Credit will be given wherever the work appears, and I'd want you to be the illustrator of the books themselves.

Hello, I’m currently looking for an artist for a creator owned comic project..

The comic is centred around a character who struggles with his mental health. The tone is quite unusual because it swings between comedy and genuinely serious. A lot of the humour comes from an almost buddy cop dynamic between the character and his own alter ego / split personality. They constantly bicker, argue and bounce off each other, so there’s a lot of room for expressive, comedic artwork.

But I also want the story to be capable of suddenly becoming very dark. There are moments where the humour drops away and the reader is hopefully hit with something genuinely shocking. That contrast is a really important part of the story, so I’m looking for an artist who enjoys that kind of tonal range and knows when to push the comedy and when to let a moment breathe.

At the moment I’m not looking to jump straight into commissioning a full issue. I’d rather test the waters and see if we’re a good creative fit. I’d be happy to pay for some concept art of the main character first, and use that as a chance for us to see how we work together.

I’m also hoping to find someone who is genuinely interested in the story and wants to have some creative input, rather than someone who just sees it as another job. Commitment. I've had freelancers for one project and am looking to hire others for a longer period of time. I'm looking for someone who is looking for a long-term relationship with the expectations that this could become full time.

Communication. It is very important for us to be able to communicate with you on this project. We do not expect you to work 7 days a week but we do require a 24-hour response if the message is sent during your working schedule. For example: If you only work Sunday through Thursday. One of the biggest requirements of this project is character continuity.

The same character must look like the same person on every page.

Some pages are action-driven comic pages.

The purpose of this engagement is to turn the concept artwork into one cohesive professionally illustrated book.

You should be comfortable using existing generated/reference artwork as visual direction while producing polished original final artwork.

Print production requirements

The final book will be professionally printed.

Experience preparing illustrated publications for print is therefore important.

Final files should include:

300 DPI minimum at final print dimensions
CMYK print files
Correct bleed
Safe margins
Binding/gutter safety
Consistent outer margins
Consistent panel gutters
High-resolution artwork
Sharp typography
No rasterised text where avoidable
Embedded or outlined fonts
Print-ready PDF
Individual high-resolution TIFF/PNG files if required

We will confirm final trim size with the selected illustrator.

The comic will likely be saddle stitched, so awareness of left-page and right-page binding safety is important.

Typography and lettering

You should also be comfortable with comic lettering.

Speech balloons must:

Clearly belong to the correct speaker
Have tails physically pointing to or touching the speaker
Follow natural left-to-right reading order
Remain clear of binding areas
Maintain consistent type size and style

Technical explanations occasionally appear as caption boxes.

These should feel editorial rather than like generic comic narration.

All text must be manually checked.

There can be no AI-generated gibberish or pseudo-text in the final artwork.

The character's chest emblem must remain consistent throughout the entire book.

The final comic should feel like it was drawn, art-directed and designed by one creative team from beginning to end.

A reader should never notice that different pages were developed at different stages.

Characters should remain recognisable.

The visual language should remain consistent.

The technical explanations should be clear.

The pages should feel dynamic.

And the final printed book should look good enough to distribute professionally at conferences, customer meetings, schools, industry events and executive engagements.

LUCA ALTA is an outdoor climbing collective looking to develop a strong, distinctive visual identity for clothing, climbing gear, stickers and social media.

We’re looking for a designer with strong aesthetic judgement who can interpret our inspiration and bring their own creative perspective.

For the initial paid test, we’d like a moodboard, two rough logo directions, typography/colour direction and brief rationale. We value clear communication, collaboration and thoughtful design.

I'm developing a satirical party card game planned for a Kickstarter launch in late 2027, published by my company, CatNap, LLC. I'm gathering rates from illustrators and graphic designers for the full visual production, which needs to be complete by the end of the year. The game is unannounced, so please keep the details confidential.

One thing up front, since "political" can give people pause: the game is APOLITICAL. It's political in setting only. There is no partisanship, no side taken, no real politicians, no live policy debates. The satire targets corruption itself, in a fictional government, and it lands on everyone in power equally. At the table it's a party game about bluffing your friends.

The tone: this is satire in the Animal Farm tradition. The entire cast is animals, and animals are inherently endearing, which is the point. The vibe to nail is ENDEARING YET CORRUPT, and the split matters: the characters themselves stay endearing (endearing, not cute), while the corruption lives in the art around them: small hints in the settings, props, and background details that you only notice when you look twice. Charming at a glance, crooked on the second look. Think of a used car salesman: charismatic, fun, enjoyable company, and absolutely trying to screw you.

This is character work, but not in the roleplaying sense. The cast is animal ARCHETYPES: each species embodies a political disposition and a cultural role in how politics works. One example: the pig is the business class. What needs continuity is the archetype: every pig, on every card a pig appears on, should read as the same kind of creature. Only one character in the game is a named individual with a consistent on-model design; other names appear in card text but are not tied to specific character illustrations.

The scope below is split so you can quote only the parts you do; illustration and graphic design may go to different people.

ILLUSTRATION. The base game is 190 cards, but the work is NOT 190 paintings. It splits into three kinds:

1. Key illustrations (full-card art): 4 standard-suit cards, one per suit; the 64 standard cards in the deck reuse these four with only the number changing. Plus 1 wildcard face and 4 card backs.
2. Spot illustrations: 32 unique small in-card pictures, one on each of the 17 action cards and 15 event cards. Each is unique, and the recurring archetypes appear across them.
3. Template faces with variants: 30 secret-objective cards share one face design with three variants (a small distinguishing detail marks easy/medium/hard; otherwise only text changes). The penalty cards (17) and reward cards (15) work the same way: shared face designs, slight detail differences, mostly text changes.

Expansions:
- Expansion A: 22 cards, ~21 unique faces, plus packaging art (a "classified dossier" envelope exterior).
- Expansion B: 20-25 cards, ~20 unique faces, plus a small tuck box.
- Expansion C: one box of ~32 cards: 17 built on the penalty-card template (text plus a slight design variation; minimal new illustration) and ~15 action-type cards needing ~10 spot illustrations. One tuck box for the whole thing.
- Premium edition: NO new illustration. Same 190 cards with slight production variations (foil accents over existing back art); at most some production-file prep.

GRAPHIC DESIGN:
- Card frame/template system (one per deck type), suit iconography, typography
- Rulebook: a single-sheet fold-out, 16 panels, ~365 x 275 mm open. Note: its cover panel doubles as the premium edition's box art (visible through a window lid), so the cover carries extra weight.
- Rules inserts for the expansions (small booklets)
- Boxes: the base game box (magnetic flip-top, ~141 x 103 x 55 mm) plus the expansion packaging above. The premium edition's box is NOT in scope; it's wooden and handled separately.

On AI, read this before quoting: how you work is your business, and AI is fine in your process. Reference collages, mood boards, ideation, whatever gets you to the drawing. The finished art is a different matter: no generated imagery in the final work, no AI painting, coloring, or cleanup in the final files, and nothing that reads as AI-generated. If I wanted art that looks generated, I could make it myself. The finals must be human-drawn and look it; this will be contractual, and I review layered source files.

Other requirements:
- Process work is part of the deliverable. Keep your sketches, drafts, and iterations (a sketchbook, physical or digital); I want WIP delivered alongside finals, with rights to use it in marketing and campaign updates. Price that in.
- Full rights assignment on finals and process work (work made for hire). Please quote on that basis, not licensing.
- Print-ready finals: 63 x 88 mm plus bleed, CMYK, layered source files included.

In your proposal, please include:
1. Your rate structure: per illustration (with complexity tiers if you use them), day rate, or a project estimate for the phases you'd take
2. Portfolio links: anything related to this kind of project, especially character art; animal characters are a big plus
3. Revision rounds included per piece, and the rate for additional rounds
4. Availability and realistic throughput in pieces per month, given the end-of-year completion target
5. Whether you'd take a small paid test assignment (2-3 cards) first. I expect to start there with anyone.
