How Brainchild Engineering doubled its reply rate to 27%
Brainchild Engineering, a Detroit product-development firm, has bid on Upwork by hand since 2017; the manual bids tracked in its history ran at a 14.8% reply rate. Since February 2026, one auto-bidding setup applies to the top 3.5% of matched jobs, usually first or second in line, and gets a reply to 27.2% of proposals.
Overview
Brainchild Engineering takes hardware from napkin sketch to manufacturing — consumer products, medical devices, defense and automotive work. Founder Dan Engerer has used Upwork as a client channel since 2017, bidding by hand at a 14.8% reply rate. The work won there was real, but the process never scaled past whatever time he could spare between engineering projects.
The challenge
Serious hardware briefs are rare and disappear fast: the client usually picks from the first handful of credible applicants. Dan bid only when engineering work allowed. Whole stretches of 2024 and 2025 have little or no bidding, and good jobs were found a day late.
What changed
In February 2026 Dan created a single auto-bidding setup in Vollna: strict filters for real product-development briefs, the AI Job Qualifier as a second gate, and bid boosting on the jobs that clear both. In five months the system read 4,781 matching jobs so he didn't have to, and bid on the few that cleared both gates.
How they run it

27.7% of these proposals got a reply, against the 14.8% his manual bidding ran at. The view rate is 57.9%, and 47.8% of viewed proposals turn into an interview. Hires aren't marked in this workspace, so the dashboard's claim stays with the pipeline: 44 qualified conversations, at $9 each in connects.
