Project Overview


You will design the look and functionality of a mobile website for a business of your creation. This project covers two key areas of design:

UI (User Interface) — how the app looks
UX (User Experience) — how the app works and feels to use


Choose one of the following business types:

Retail — a store that sells products in categories (clothing, grocery, etc.)
Restaurant — a food or beverage brand
Event / Travel — a festival, venue, or travel booking experience


What You Will Design
Your app must include the following screens:

A phone lock/home screen showing your app icon (Minor Project 4 - In Class)
A home page — both the primary view and a hidden/expanded menu view
3 interior pages that a user can navigate to and from the home page

Part 1: Building the Brand
A. Brand Identity Sheet
Minor Project 5 (mp5) — Template Provided

Using Adobe InDesign, design your brand identity elements using the provided template. You are responsible for creating your own:

Logo
Logotype (how your brand name is typeset)
Up to 5-color palette
Up to 3 typefaces for use across your app
Typeface tip: Use Google Fonts for your selections. Google Fonts are web-friendly and will not default to a substitute font when viewed online.



B. Research
Competitive Analysis
Look at 3 competitors that already have a website or app. For each one, write about:

The overall look, feel, tone, and voice
What you think the goals of the site are
A summary of the design — what works, what does not
After analyzing all three, write a short paragraph explaining how your brand fits into — or stands apart from — that market.



User Persona
Create a fictional but realistic user for your app. A good persona includes:

A made-up name
Basic demographics (age, occupation, lifestyle)
Goals — what do they want from your app?
Tech comfort level
Hobbies or interests
This person represents your primary user. Every design decision should consider whether it works for them.



User Scenarios
Describe what your persona will do on your app. These are specific tasks — not general browsing. Good examples:

Adding an item to a cart and checking out
Signing up for a loyalty program
Booking a reservation
You will use these tasks later when testing your prototype.



Part 2: Information Architecture
A. Site Map
Plan the full navigation structure of your app before designing anything. Start with the home page and build outward.

Then create flowcharts for your 3 user journeys — step by step, screen by screen.

Example: Home → Category → Product Page → Add to Cart → Checkout → Confirmation



B. Wireframes
Wireframes are rough sketches of your screens. They do not need to look polished — they just need to show:

Where your logo and branding will sit
Where images and large content blocks go
Where navigation, icons, search, and footers are placed
Wireframes are black and white and use placeholder boxes instead of real content. Think of them as a blueprint before construction.



Part 3: Screen Design & Interactivity
A. Design Your Static Screens
Design all required screens listed in the Project Overview above. You may use either:

Adobe InDesign — recommended if you are more comfortable with it
Figma — recommended if you want to design and prototype in one place
If you design in InDesign, you will bring your screens into Figma to add interactivity. If you design directly in Figma, you can prototype in the same file.



B. Add Interactivity with Figma
Use Figma to connect your screens and make your app feel interactive.

Getting started:

Create a free account at figma.com
Upload or recreate your screens in Figma
Use the Prototype tab to link buttons and navigation between screens
Test your prototype using Present mode before submitting
Important: Free Figma accounts are limited to 3 projects and 3 pages per file. Do not delete any work — you cannot recover it once it is gone. Organize carefully from the start.

Lab note: Adobe XD is still available on some lab computers and can be used as a backup, but Figma is preferred. Adobe XD is no longer being updated by Adobe.



C. User Testing
Once your prototype is working, ask a classmate to complete at least 3 of your user tasks.

Rules:

Give them your prototype link and a task to complete
Do not help them or guide them — just watch
Time how long each task takes
Take notes on where they struggled or got confused
This is real-world UX testing. What you learn here should shape your final edits.



D. Rationale
Write your rationale using the provided template. Your rationale should cover:

Your design choices (colors, fonts, navigation)
Your research findings
Who tested your app, what they said, and what you changed based on their feedback
Your specific target audience
Your rationale must be linked as a page inside your app prototype.
