I am developing a novel pipeline tapping drill bit system used for hot tapping operations in oil & gas, water, and utility pipelines. The system includes: • A 1-7/16″ OD tapping drill bit • A replaceable cutting crown • An internal chip-capture magnet • A proprietary lubrication capsule system designed to deliver cutting oil during tapping, even under line pressure I am seeking an experienced mechanical engineer to take this from concept into manufacturable, test-ready engineering design. This is not just a CAD drawing job. I need an engineer who understands mechanical design decisions, tolerances, materials, flow paths, and real-world industrial tooling. ⸻ Scope of Work The engineer will be responsible for: 🔹 Drill Bit Design • Finalize internal and external geometry of a 1-7/16″ OD tapping bit • Design chip evacuation paths (flutes, clearances) • Design internal magnet pocket for chip capture • Design interface for replaceable cutting crown • Select appropriate materials (steel body, carbide interface) 🔹 Lubrication Capsule System • Design a pressure-tolerant lubrication capsule • Define capsule size, wall thickness, and activation method • Design internal oil flow paths from capsule to cutting face • Ensure lubrication flows forward toward the cutter, not backward under pressure • Consider single-use and multi-capsule configurations for larger cutters 🔹 Engineering Deliverables • Fully dimensioned manufacturing drawings • 3D CAD files (STEP preferred) • Tolerance stack-ups where needed • Material callouts • Assembly drawings • Notes suitable for CNC machining and manufacturing • Design suitable for prototype testing and future mass production ⸻ Required Experience ✔ Mechanical engineering background (degree preferred) ✔ Experience designing industrial tools, cutters, or drilling equipment ✔ Experience with fluid flow or lubrication systems ✔ Strong understanding of manufacturing constraints ✔ Experience designing parts for CNC machining ✔ Ability to think through real-world mechanical problems, not just draw models Preferred (but not required): • Experience in oil & gas, pipeline tooling, or heavy industrial equipment • Experience with hot tapping or pressure systems ⸻ Software Requirements Must be proficient in at least one: • SolidWorks • Fusion 360 • Inventor • Creo Deliverables must be exportable as STEP files. ⸻ Project Type • Initial engagement: design + engineering package • Potential for ongoing work (larger cutters, multiple capsule systems, revisions) ⸻ Budget Open to proposals.
