About the project

We're an indie mobile word game (already live, growing audience) adding a new "notebook" visual theme. The screen is a sheet of ruled paper. Missy and the Bali Dogs is Book 1 of The Bali Dog Stories — a children's picture book series set in a real coastal village in Bali, Indonesia. The stories follow a cast of real dogs, each with a distinct personality, drawn from everyday life. The world is warm, grounded, and quietly emotional.

The lead character is Missy — a small, white, real Bali dog with a curling tail, lean build, and a distinctively alert, independent nature. Her likeness must be captured accurately and held consistently across every illustration. I am a professional photographer based in Bali and will provide an extensive reference photo library: Missy in different moods and settings, the beach at various times of day, the village, the sea temple, fishing shacks, and the surrounding landscape.

The tone is painterly and observational — warm and atmospheric, not cartoon or flat. The illustrations carry the emotional weight of the story.




Project scope and deliverables

Phase 1 — Character Development Pack (before illustration begins)
Before any page work starts, the illustrator must deliver a Character Development Pack for approval. This establishes Missy and the core cast as consistent, recognisable characters across the full series.

Required:
• Missy — front view, side view, sitting, running, alert expression, relaxed expression
• Core pack characters (5 additional dogs) — distinct designs, cohesive as a group
• CMYK colour palette with named values
• Line style and brush style guide
• Two versions of Missy: Book Missy (painterly, full scene) and Brand Missy (simplified, merchandise-ready)
• Guest character style guide — a one-page reference for future illustrators joining the series

Phase 2 — Story illustrations (pages 1–24)
• Approximately 24 illustrated pages, a mix of single pages and double-page spreads
• Full bleed illustrations, 8.5 × 8.5 inches square format
• Text overlay zone: lower 20% of each story page must remain intentionally soft, light, and low-detail
• Double-page spreads set up as single wide canvas: 17.375" × 8.75" including bleed

Phase 3 — Back matter (pages 25–32)
• Light illustrative elements only — this section is led by professional photography
• Decorative and supportive role, not dominant illustration
• Spot illustrations, character vignettes, and decorative borders as directed

Phase 4 — Cover
• Single flat file: back cover + spine + front cover
• Spine width confirmed once paper stock is finalised

All final files must be:
• 300 DPI minimum (350 DPI preferred) at final print size
• CMYK, U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2
• PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-4 for print deliverables
• Layered source files retained throughout (PSD, Procreate, or AI)

Deadline expectations

I am not working to an aggressive deadline — I want the right result over a rushed one. That said, I do expect structured, milestone-based progress with regular check-ins.

Expected working process:
• Sketch approval before proceeding to line art
• Line art approval before proceeding to colour
• Colour rough approval before final render
• No illustration moves to final without sign-off at each stage

Please include your realistic timeline in your proposal — both for the Character Development Pack and for the full 24 illustrated pages. Illustrators who can work to a clear milestone schedule are strongly preferred.

Required experience

• Demonstrated experience illustrating children's picture books (ages 3–7 specifically)
• Strong animal illustration — expressive, accurate, character-consistent across multiple pages
• Painterly or watercolour-style digital illustration (or traditional with high-quality digital delivery)
• Experience working to print specifications (bleed, safe zones, CMYK, IngramSpark or similar POD)
• Ability to design characters for both storytelling and merchandise use
• Portfolio that shows emotional range and scene-setting, not just character studies

This is not the right project for illustrators whose strength is cartoon, anime, graphic, or flat design styles.



Working arrangement

You will work directly and independently with me — there is no internal team. I am the author and photographer. I will provide:

• Clear written feedback at each milestone stage
• Prompt communication and timely approvals

I expect the illustrator to bring creative confidence within the agreed brief, ask questions early rather than late, and flag any concerns about scope or timeline before they become problems. I want someone who communicates clearly and commits fully before we begin.
